'Youths' Cause Problems In Scarborough Harbour

Scarborough Harbour

Published by Alex Taylor at 11:15am 10th August 2018. (Updated at 11:29am 10th August 2018)

The police and the coastguard have been called to deal with youths causing problems in Scarborough harbour.

The joint action took place yesterday afternoon (Thursday 9 August) with a number of youngsters causing criminal damage, drug taking and anti-social behaviour, as well as taking part in dangerous activities such as tombstoning.

Officers and members of the coastguard spoke to a number of young people to give advice and information about the consequences of their activities.

A spokesperson for Scarborough Coastguard said:

"Tombstoning is particularly dangerous as quite often the depth of water is unknown and obstacles under the water surface cannot be seen.

If there is insufficient depth of water available this can cause serious and sometimes life changing injuries.

Coastguard officers pointed out to them the risks they are taking and the possible outcomes if it goes wrong.

Hopefully the operation today will go some way to reducing the problems experienced recently in the area caused by a small minority of people.

If you see anyone in difficulty on or near the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
