Scarborough Can Handle National Armed Forces Day

Published by Matthew Pells at 6:01am 2nd July 2018.

Following the announcement on Saturday that Scarborough will be the venue for the National Armed Forces Day event in 2020, there have been concerns raised on social media about the towns ability to cope with a potential influx of two hundred thousand people.

Scarborough has been hosting it's own local Armed Forces Day for the last ten years and the event which is seen as one of the most successful in the country regularly attracts twenty to thirty thousand visitors.

Each year one location is chosen to hold a 'national' event which becomes the focus for the military, politicians and the media. On Saturday the Ministry of Defence announced that next year's event will be in Salisbury and that the 2020 event will be in Scarborough. Planners have suggested that as many as two hundred thousand people could attend the event in June of 2020.

Comments on social media over the weekend have generally welcomed the news that the town is to host the event but also highlighted traffic and parking as potential issues.

Leader of the council Derek Bastiman says he hopes the event will be spread out across the borough and make use of facilities like the Open Air Theatre.

John Senior from the South bay traders association says there is plenty of room for the event in the town itself.

Sir Gary Verity from Welcome to Yorkshire says Scarborough has a good track record when it comes to delivering big events.
