Scarborough OAT Opening Week Hailed A 'Success'

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 8:01am 24th June 2018.

This week is being hailed as a success for Scarborough's Open Air Theatre.

The summer season got off to a curtain raiser from Lionel Ritchie on Tuesday (19 June.) That was follwed up by a performance from The Script on Thursday (21 June) and Gary Barlow on Friday (22 June.)

Tonight (Sunday 24 June) it's the turn of Nile Rogers and Chic to mark the end of a busy opening week for the venue.

Peter Taylor is from promoters Cuffe and Taylor, he said:

"Artists are putting out feedback about about Scarborough in the industry. We some people come over from America the other night from a big agency and they represent some huge acts.

So watch this space. I've booked four nights for next year already so we're well on our way I think.

It's brilliant for tourism to the area. I've even had some family come down for the week, booked into a B&B in Scalby.

They've been going all around the area, Whitby and Bridlington, so it's great for the area.

There's a lot of locals coming but there's a lot of tourists that are coming to these shows.

These are big international artists and we've had people come from Australia, some people came from South America to see Lionel Ritchie and for Britney Spear, they're literally coming from all over the world."

Well done Cuffe and Taylor.

See how things go when the council wants it to work. They maintain and heavily finance it - and permit acts to be booked a year in advance!

When they want the land - things don't go quite so well.
