Detecting degrees in Humberside

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 7:44am 16th August 2010.

A group of 15 detective constables and sergeants have been presented with their BA Honours degrees in Investigation after finishing the course with the University of Sunderland.

Funded personally by the individual officers, the detectives - six detective sergeants and nine detective constables - enrolled on the course in June last year and were awarded credits to account for the first two years of study meaning they only needed to complete the third and final year to gain a degree.

Course work and studying was completed in officers’ own off duty time to ensure there was no impact in their daily duties and the students attended lectures at Sunderland on six occasions, the other work being completed via distance learning.

A second group of detectives has now started studying towards the qualification with 21 officers ranging from constables up to chief inspectors undertaking the study.

A further Masters qualification is now being developed by the university.

Force Training Manager Hazel Pearce said: “Achieving this qualification is reward for commitment to personal development and I congratulate all who have reached this standard. Personal development, individual commitment and drive to achieve is the way forward for learning and development and gaining a BA Honours degree shows the high standard of investigation in Humberside Police.”
