A Scarborough woman is preparing to sail across the North Atlantic.

Julie Snowden has only been sailing for 18 months, but next month she'll take part in the 'Round the World Clipper Yacht Race.'

The first part of her route takes her from New York on June 20 to Londonderry in Northern Ireland.

From there, they'll race around the west coast of Ireland before heading back up and finishing in Liverpool on July 28, a distance of almost 5,000 nautical miles.

Julie is being sponsored by Scarborough based company Moneyweb and is also raising funds for two charities; the Fisherman's Mission and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Julie said:

"Even in summer, there's cyclones that can happen in the North Atlantic. The weather is quite unpredictable and climate change has got a lot to answer for.

You're so far away from land you've got to be self sufficient while you're out there, no one's going to come and rescue you.

If I thought about it too much it would be very daunting but I'm absolutely embracing it, I'm very excited.

So many local people have got behind me, I'm very humble about it. At Scarborough Yacht Club, there are a couple of people there that have done the Clipper before so they've been able to give me a lot of advice.

Also, the guys who've taken me out, I've learned a lot of different and new skills from them on a smaller boat but it's all been very useful."
