A man is in a serious but stable condition after a crash on the A171.

A motorcycle and van collided at 12pm at Ugthorpe, near Whitby yesterday (19th April).

The black Honda motorcycle rider, a 55-year-old man from Thornaby, Stockton on Tees, is in a serious but stable condition at James Cook University Hospital.

He is recovering following surgery and is expected to be out of hospital in around a week's time.

He was taken to the hospital by air ambulance.

The driver of the white Citroen Berlingo van, a 33-year-old man from Hull, was uninjured.

The collision occurred as the motorcycle was heading from Whitby towards Ugthorpe and the Citroen van was turning right at the junction for Ugthorpe caravan park.

The motorcycle collided with the rear of the van.

Local diversions were put in place while the emergency services worked at the scene.

The road re-opened at around 3.30pm.

Witnesses are asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Garry Chapman.
