A Scarborough man has been sentenced after damaging a road during a 'car cruise' event.

It happened on Royal Albert Drive last October, and led to £47,740 worth of damage to the road surface which had only just been laid.

24 year-old Anthony Hopcraft, of Maple Drive, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and causing criminal damage at York Crown Court today.

He been given a 7-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.

He also has to do 160 hours of unpaid work and has been given a 20 day activity order.

In addition, Hopcraft has been disqualified from driving for two years and has to take an extended driving test after then.

He's been fined £750, along with a victim surcharge of £140.

Here's video footage of what happened..

PC434 Will Lane, of the Scarborough Community Impact Team who investigated the incident, said:

“Having a driving licence is a privilege, not a right. On the evening of the 15th of October last year Hopcraft abused that privilege and drove well below the standard expected.

Public safety will always be our core business and I hope that when Hopcraft re-gains his driving licence in the future his attitude towards driving will be significantly improved.

This was a very intricate investigation and furthermore, £50,000 from the public purse was spent rectifying the damage.

I welcome the sentence handed down today and it sends a clear message that any form of vehicular disorder will not be tolerated in our town”.
