There has been disappointment for Yorkshire Coast Rail users today after the appearance of a new Manchester to Bridlington train service on rail timetables turned out to be a mistake.

Eagle eyed rail users on the Yorkshire Coast had been celebrating after spotting a direct train from Manchester Piccadilly to Scarborough via Bridlington and Filey on timetables from May.

Some online ticket booking systems (including Transpennine Express) showed direct services starting on May 20th which would mean there would be no need for anyone to change mid-way through their journey.

The full list of stopping points on the Transpennine Express service included Bridlington, Hunmanby, Filey, Seamer and Scarborough.

But all was not as it seemed.

The National Rail Enquiries website explained that the service may not be running at all.

"The core timetable changes twice a year, in May and December. As a result of billions of pounds of investment in the rail network, and in new trains and services, the May 2018 timetable change is the largest in living memory, needing the rescheduling of almost four million services – some 600% more than normal."

The appearance of the Manchester to Scarborough service via Hull on the booking sites turned out to be the result of a technical problem rather than a confirmed new addition to the timetable.

A spokesperson from TransPennine Express said:

“We currently have no plans to introduce a service between Hull and Scarborough as part of our May timetable change and are working to correct the error on our website.”
