Scarborough CCTV Cameras in Doubt

The future of CCTV cameras in Scarborough borough is in doubt.

It's after a reduction in funds for the scheme by North Yorkshire county council, which is cutting its contribution from £76,000 a year, to £22,000.

That's a reduction of more than 70%.

It will take effect from next year (2019-2020) and will mean either the closure of Scarborough's CCTV Centre, it operating for fewer hours, or the borough council finding the £54,000 per year which has been withdrawn.

The issue has been looked at by the Overview and Scrutiny Board at the borough council.

Cabinet Member for Communities, Sandra Turner, said:

"I think this is such an essential service, that it's a retrospective decision for us moving forward on CCTV provision in the borough.

If the funding isn't there, there could be a potential loss of jobs."
