A64 Roadworks Include 40mph Speed Limit

Drivers heading from the Yorkshire Coast towards Leeds may be in for slower journeys from Monday (February 12th) as work starts to replace 10 miles of the central reservation barrier between York and Tadcaster.

The works will result in a section of the dual carriageway being reduced to a 40mph zone with average speed check cameras in operation.

Highways England project manager Chris Dunn said:

“This is all essential maintenance and safety work which needs to be carried out along the A64 from the junction with the A1(M) to Askham Bar.

By replacing 10 miles of safety barrier we will be improving safety for the thousands of drivers who use this stretch of the A64 every day. The work will be carried out in 2.5mile stretches to minimise disruption for drivers.

As part of this work we will also be closing the vehicle crossing point in the central reservation at Headley Bar, along with several other pedestrian crossing points which are being closed on safety grounds.”

For the duration of the work there will be a speed restriction of 40mph with average speed cameras in place 24 hours a day. The speed limit has been lowered as large sections of the central reservation barrier will have been removed. The majority of work will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am, avoiding weekends.

By putting in place a 40 mph limit Highways England say they are able to maintain 2 standard width lanes open in each direction during the day which will they say will minimise the disruption for drivers and enable them to complete the work in a shorter time.

The scheme is expected to be completed by mid-summer, subject to reasonable weather conditions
