An elderly couple have been rescued after their car left the road on the North York Moors.

Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team were called to the incident at around 4.00pm yesterday (Wednesday 7 February) at Wheeldale Gill near Egton Bridge.

The couple were rescued by police whilst the rescue team was on route. Occupants of two other vehicles that had left the road in the icy conditions were also rescued.

As they waited for a recovery vehicle, the driver of that had also become stuck at Egton Bridge, so the Mountain Rescue Team drove over the moors to recover his vehicle.

A spokesperson for Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue team said:

"Six team members and two 4 x 4 vehicles were deployed for just over four and a half hours.

'So much more than mountains' and perhaps we can truly claim to be the fourth emergency service."
