A local authority senior manager has been recognised for services to the Yorkshire Coast tourism industry at a special ceremony in Scarborough.

Janet Deacon, Tourism and Corporate Marketing Manager for Scarborough Borough Council and Area Director for regional tourism organisation, Welcome to Yorkshire, picked up the Tourism Award at the Scarborough Hospitality Association annual dinner dance at Scarborough Spa on Saturday 3 February.

The award is presented annually to the person that the members of Scarborough Hospitality Association judge to have made the best contribution to the local tourism industry in the last 12 months.

Janet was recognised for supporting tourism businesses to achieve their ambitions and her great work in leading tourism colleagues to ensure the Yorkshire Coast remains one of the best loved areas to visit in the UK.

She said:

“While I am delighted to have been presented with the award and recognised by the industry I have worked within for many years, I receive it on behalf of the council’s visitor services and events teams and our partners at Welcome to Yorkshire.

Together, we all work very hard with tourism businesses to ensure our area remains attractive for visitors and gets maximum exposure regionally, nationally and further afield. I couldn’t be prouder that industry colleagues have recognised us in this way.”

Shirley Smith, President of Scarborough Hospitality Association added:

“Janet is a truly worthy and deserving winner of the Tourism Award. She should be very proud of everything she has accomplished for the Yorkshire Coast.”
