National Carers Rights Day Celebrated On Yorkshire Coast

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 6:00am 24th November 2017.

National Carers Rights Day is being highlighted on the Yorkshire Coast today.

Scarborough and Ryedale Carers Resource (SRCR) is raising awareness of the day with an event in Hunmanby.

They'll be at Hunmanby Methodist Church from 10.00am until 12.30pm where they'll be offering a free carers wellbeing session.

There's also an introduction to Mindfulness and gives people the opportunity to meet other carers and take time out of their caring role.

SRCR is encouraging carers in Scarborough and Whitby to get in touch to find out more about their rights as well as find out the support they are entitled to.

That can include certain benefits or practical help like getting adaptations in the home. SRCR offers support to Young Carers from the age of eight upward, with the average age of a Young Carer 12.

They also provide a direct service to over 600 unpaid adult carers per annum in Scarborough Borough and Ryedale District.

Alison Ainsbury is from SRCR, she said:

"From our point of view, we want to mark the day by having a special session that gives carers an opportunity to have some time to themselves and get some support to relax and reduce any stress that they're feeling, because that's a major thing for carers.

The whole duty of our service is to be there for the carer. To help them feel supported, to help them stay well, feel in control and to help them access and achieve what they need to, to be able to care with confidence."
