Scarborough MP Has Say On New Defence Secretary

Robert Goodwill

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 2:15pm 2nd November 2017. (Updated at 2:18pm 2nd November 2017)

The Conservative MP for Scarborough and Whitby has been giving us his reaction to the announcement of the new Defence Secretary.

Robert Goodwill has been telling us what he thinks about the announcement that Gavin Williamson has replaced Sir Michael Fallon, who resigned last night.

Mr Williamson is from Scarborough and attended East Ayton primary School, Raincliffe School and Scarborough Sixth Form College.

He's currently the MP for South Staffordshire and his recent role was as the government's Chief Whip.

Robert said:

"I've known Gavin a long time, he used to be a county councillor and indeed he was runner up when I was selected for the Conservative candidate for Scarborough and Whitby.

He then went on and had a very successful business career in the pottery china trade and he's been very impressive both as the Prime Minister's Parliamentary Private Secretary and more recently as our chief whip.

In terms of the sexual harassment scandal, we need to put this in perspective.  I'm the Minister for Education and deal with vulnerable children and there's some very bad assaults going on out there.

There's abuse, there's girls being subjected to genital mutilation so we should also make sure that we don;t take our eye off the ball in terms of some of the terrible abuses and assaults that are going on in society as a whole."

Robert's been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Jon Burke..
