Filey MP Talks Fracking

Filey MP Talks Fracking

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 8:04am 8th October 2017.

The MP for Filey, Thirsk and Malton has been talking to us about the controversial subject of fracking.

Kevin Hollinrake is a supporter of the process to extract shale gas and a village that falls into his constituency, Kirby Misperton, has been the centre of many protests in recent weeks.

According to the company that wants to frack there, Third Energy, fracking is due to start there in just a matter of weeks.

The protests have even led to some arrests.

Kevin said:

"It's not about preferring gas to renewable energy, we need renewable energy as well, that's the future.

But they can't be everything in the present time. We'll need gas in any circumstance for 20, 30, 40 years.

I absolutely defend the right of anybody to peacefully protest against something they don't want.

I support that 100%. What I don't agree with is when people then take illegal action like blocking the highway, locking themselves onto gates or equipment."
