Toast of the Coast Winners Revealed

Toast of the Coast Awards

The very best of the Yorkshire Coast was celebrated on Friday night in the inaugural Toast of the Coast Awards.

The event at Scarborough Spa was hosted by Yorkshire Coast Radio in partnership with Lloyd Dowson Chartered Accountants and SIV.

A total of fifteen different awards were presented to local businesses and to individuals who have made a difference to the lives of those around them.

And the winners were......


Best Sports Person Award sponsored by North East Security Shutters

Won by Matthew Nelson

Matthew is from Scarborough Swimming Club and has represented the University of Hull at the British Universities & Colleges Triathlon Championships winning the title of University Champion and beating a World Junior Silver Medalist in the process. He also qualified for the Elite Circuit and Continental Cup Circuit.


Child Of Achievement Award sponsored by Raven Hall

Won by Josh Williamson

Josh was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer and as a result had to have his leg amputated. Just weeks later he was scaling climbing frames and getting through it always with a smile. Paula Poole nominating said ‘his story has touched the hearts of many in our local community and he inspires me”.


Best Teacher sponsored by Scarborough TEC

Won by Sharon Corden

Sharon was nominated by Rebecca who said Sharon had shown a level of kindness and dedication to her child which she didn’t think was possible after austerity and teachers being stretched so much. She added that her own daughter was so inspired by Mrs Corden she now wanted to be a teacher herself!


Best Volunteer sponsored by Saint Cecilia’s Care Services

Won by Sue Brownbridge

Sue has volunteered for Saint Catherine’s for over 23 years. She’s spent countless hours being a supporter for their Bereavement Service, helping children, young people and adults who may be struggling with grief and she is appreciated by everyone.


Best Carer sponsored by Yorkshire Coast Homes

Won by Trish Davis

Trish works at Saint Cecilia’s Care Home in Scarborough and is described by Mike Padgham who nominated her as a star, indispensable and someone goes the extra mile. Her role is Housekeeper but she also does shifts as a Carer and she’s even been seen with a paintbrush sprucing the place up!


Best Grandparent sponsored by Flixton Sawmill

Won by Heather Brown

Heather took on parenting duties at the age of 62 for her two grandchildren after the tragic death of their mum, her daughter. Her other daughter Meshell who nominated her, said winning this award would show her that she is appreciated more than she knows.


Best Parent Award sponsored by Jitterbugs Nursery.

Won by Rebecca Doyle

Scarborough couple Rebecca & Phillip wanted to adopt a child but came across a brother and sister who needed a family to keep them together. Authorities thought it would be too big a challenge but Rebecca fought to make it happen, working tirelessly with professionals, social workers, schools, therapists and local authorities to make sure she could keep the children together and give them everything they need.
