Councillor Has Say On Futurist Demolition Delay

Councillor Has Say On Futurist Demolition Delay

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 6:01am 3rd October 2017.

It's believed that the head of planning at Scarborough Borough Council made the decision to delay the planning application for the demolition of the Futurist Theatre.

That's according to Councillor Janet Jefferson, an independent councillor on the borough council, who is against the demolition.

The borough council had been hoping to present detailed proposals for the demolition at the Planning and Development Committee later this week (Thursday 5 October).

One of the reasons given for the delay was because the planning committee received requests for clarification from some of the statutory consultees which require further information from the Council’s contractors and their engineers.

It was decided the decision-making process should be delayed until these points of clarification have been dealt with.

These 'statutory consultees' include the Theatre's Trust and the Cinema's Trust.

Janet said:

"The Theatre's Trust and the Cinema's Trust are two statutory consultees, similarly, other statutory ones are utilities, not people adjoining the building.

There's been such an interest in retaining this building, and as I understand, there are some 99 written objections to demolishing it, not just from people from Scarborough, but around the country.

We haven't yet received a planning application for the site and there is no costings available as to what the demolition will cost.

£4 million was agreed to be allocated by one vote on 9 January 2017. Around £465,000 was allocated for various surveys.

That leaves about £3.5 million left."

Scarborough Borough Council was approached for comment but a spokesperson indicated that there was nothing to add to Council Leader Derek Bastiman's comments over the weekend.

But they would make further comment when the application has been determined.

Councillor Bastiman's statement read:

“A majority of elected members voted to demolish the Futurist Theatre at a Full Council meeting in January. This application to the Planning and Development Committee concerns the detail of the demolition process and the proposed slope stabilisation scheme.

It’s important that elected members on the Planning and Development Committee have a complete picture before making a decision.”
