Whitby Town are getting ready to host teams from some of the big name European clubs.

Next week, teams from Newcastle United, Celtic and AZ Alkmaar will arrive at the Turnbull Ground to take part in the 'Whitby Challenge Cup.'

The pre-season competition starts on Thursday (27 July) with the third place play off game and the final on the Saturday.

Celtic vs Newcastle United-Thursday 27 July (7.45pm)
Whitby Town vs AZ Alkmaar-Friday 28 July (7.45pm)
Third place play off-Saturday 29 July (1.30pm)
Final-Saturday 29 July (5.30pm)

Graham Hinchcliffe is from Whitby Town, he said:

"There's one or two players, certainly from the AZ Alkmaar team, who have had first team experience, but effectively the clubs are sending their development squads.

So it's players up to the age of 23, who are very much on the brink of the first team squads.

So as well as some very skillful players, there's going to be quite a bit of money's worth on the pitch as well in terms of value of players.

I was set the task by the chairman just before Christmas to come up with an idea that would raise the profile of the club.

When I came back and told him that I might have an opportunity to get these teams here, I don't think he believed me.

But now we've done it, it's a great opportunity for Whitby Town."

The Newcastle development team will be managed by former Newcastle, Liverpool and England player Peter Beardsley.
