Flamingo Land to Sponsor Scarborough Stadium

Flamingo Land has been announced as the successful bid to become the first sponsor of the new Scarborough Football Stadium.

The new ground which will become Scarborough Athletic's home ground will be known as the "Flamingo Land Stadium".

Flamingo Land say the name will change to "Flamingo Land Coast Stadium" when their new attraction is open on the Town’s South Bay. Although their plans for this attraction on the site of the Futurist Theater have yet to be approved. The land is still owned by the borough council.

Flamingo Land became the Stadiums new sponsor after a six figure sum and five year contract was accepted by the Borough Council. 

In a statement Flamingo Land, CEO Gordon Gibb said :

"We continue to be passionate about the Town’s redevelopment and relish working with such a forward thinking Council Team.  We hope that our financial commitment to the Stadium reflects this and demonstrates that Scarborough is a Town which is very much ‘on the up’.

Football has always been intertwined with our history at Flamingo Land and we view the Town’s team returning to Scarborough as being ‘a dream come true’ that we are delighted to support” said Gordon Gibb, CEO at Flamingo Land Resort Yorkshire."

Scarborough Borough Council started a 'naming rights' process in May, asking interested parties to apply for the opportunity to name the new stadium, the deadline for entries was June 12th.

Scarborough Athletic play their first game at the newly named stadium on Saturday July 15th when they face Sheffield United in a pre-season friendly. The facility will will also be home to the Scarborough Ladies Football Club.

The Gibbs family have a long connection with football. Gordon Gibbs, became the youngest ever football league chairman at the age of 28 when he bought Bradford City in 2002. His father Robert was owner of Hamilton Academicals for 30 years.

Flamingo Land previously sponsored Scarborough Football Club in the 80's & 90's, they have also previously sponsored Hull City, Middlesborough and the Leeds United Academy.
