Facelift for Scarborough Campus of Hull University

Facelift for Scarborough Campus of Hull University

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 1:12pm 1st July 2010.

The redevelopment, which is costing £2.4m, started this week and will last throughout the summer months, ending when students return for the start of the new semester.

The project will include a complete overhaul of the current Keith Donaldson library and study areas, to create a more open-plan and welcoming atmosphere whilst providing the resources students and staff need to learn and teach more effectively. The area will also be more accessible for students with disabilities.

Thousands of books from the existing library have been moved temporarily to the Hull campus to enable students to still access course materials during the summer.

Plans were drawn up by Darntons EGS and York-based contractors William Birch & Sons will carry out the work.

Dr Craig Gaskell, Dean of the Scarborough Campus, said: “Although the timeframe of this major redevelopment is very challenging, we are confident that when our students arrive in September they will be very impressed. This work shows the continuing commitment by the University to the Scarborough Campus, and in the quality of our student experience.

“The redeveloped library will see our resources become more easily accessible, will cluster staff around one central support hub, and provide more areas for study- whether students prefer to work quietly on their own, or in study groups. The new layout incorporates former office space and teaching rooms which will be upgraded and replaced elsewhere.  The project will also provide a new, more accessible home for the Students’ Union.”

He added: “The redevelopment will also highlight some of the period features of the rooms, such as beautiful fireplaces and windows, which formed part of the original building that is celebrating its centenary this year.”

As well as the improvements being made to the library, renovations to the on-campus halls of residence are also underway. Work started last summer with two of the halls, and will now roll out to the remaining four, with rooms being completely redecorated with new furniture and new kitchens. In total, £1.3m is being spent on the student accommodation overhaul with the works undertaken by local contractor KFB Ltd.

Plans of the redevelopment will be on display at the Scarborough Campus open day on 10 July.

The Scarborough redevelopment is part of wider major work going on at the University of Hull, which also includes around £10m of renovation at its Hull Campus.
