Scarborough Sports Village Opened By Olympian

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 8:01am 10th June 2017.

The new Scarborough Sports Village will get an official opening by an Olympian today.

Colin Jackson will mark the official opening of the £15 million facility which opened its doors to the public on Monday (5 June.)

Leader of Scarborough Borough Council Derek Bastiman and Mayor of Borough of Scarborough Martin Smith.

The centre will officially open at 9.30am with the chance for visitors to challenge Colin Jackson in a  'Beat the Olympian' fitness challenge as well as partake in a group circuits class, also led by the athlete.

The day will also give visitors the chance to tour the new centre and try out the available facilities.

Colin said of the day:

"You'll find that kids will have a go at different sports. They'll have a go at swimming, they'll have a go at basketball, they'll do things that they've never done before.

That's the best thing about sport in that sense, you will find something, you are good at that you enjoy and you'll stick with it, it doesn't matter age.

I'm really looking forward to the opening day. I think anyone that knows me will say that I am so happy when new sports facilities are opening.

I think it's just such a positive thing and I think sometimes people underestimate the power of sport.

So when I see new facilities available to the community, I get excited!"
