Scarborough Sixth Form College Encourages Students To Vote

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 11:44am 22nd May 2017. (Updated at 11:45am 22nd May 2017)

Scarborough Sixth Form College is encouraging its students to vote in next month's general election.

Today is your last chance to register to vote for the election on June 8, and the college is trying to appeal to younger voters.

The students have been taking part in their own debates ahead of the election and putting across what is important to them when it comes to voting.

They also took part in a 'simulated voting booth' to see how easy it is to vote and to dispel some of the myths that surrounding voting.

Jo Walker is the Guidance Support Manager at Scarborough Sixth Form College, she said:

It's important politicians look at young people's lifestyles and coming out to the places where people are and widening the participation.

Making sure it's not just a one way conversation but actually listening to  young people and finding out what it is that's a concern to them.

In the case of women, people have died to give us the vote. Other arguments are 'if don't vote you can't moan.'

The bottom line is, we are lucky to live in a society where we have democracy. Every vote counts.

You're entitled to change your mind, you don't have to stick with one political party for the rest of your life.

Think about what's important to you and if it means something, use the opportunity would be my advice."

Listen to more of what Jo had to say about young voters below:

Today sees Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn head to Scarborough. He'll be at the Suncourt at the Spa from 2.00pm.
