A man has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for an armed robbery in Scarborough.

Patrick Kevin Shannon, 35, was dealt with at York Crown Court on Friday about the incident, which occurred at the One Stop Shop, North Leas Avenue, on 10 April 2017.

At around 2pm that day, Shannon entered the shop with two other men with white bandanas covering their faces.

Shannon threatened the shop staff with a knife before he and the other two men ran off with scratch cards.

A brave member of the public gave chase and helped police detain Shannon nearby. The man was awarded £750 by the Judge for assisting the police.

DC Steve Monty, of the Scarborough Serious Crime Team, said:

“The heavy prison sentence handed to Shannon reflects the gravity of the offence he committed. We are grateful to the member of the public who bravely helped officers detain Shannon which has led to justice being served.”

An 18-year-old man and a 30-year-old man have been arrested in connection with the robbery. They have been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Anyone with information that could help the ongoing investigation is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for the Serious Crime Team Scarborough.
