Are you having problems using the one pound coins when paying for parking in Scarborough borough?

Well, that's because the machines are yet to be updated in the area. As it stands, NONE of the on street parking machines in the borough will accept the new one pound coins, which went into circulation earlier this year.

According to Scarborough Borough Council, the machines should be updated arrive within the next couple of weeks and that they will definitely be in place for the summer.

However, once installed, the new machines will not accept the old pound coins at all.

A spokesperson from North Yorkshire County Council said:

“The County Council is responsible for on-street parking only and through its Civil Parking Enforcement contracts with Scarborough Borough Council is in the process of converting all of its parking meters to accept the new £1 coin.

Every effort is being made to complete this at the earliest opportunity to minimise any inconvenience to drivers and we thank them for their patience during this time.’’

Councillor John Knock is from Scarborough Borough Council, he said:

"All the machines are being converted within the next two to three weeks, that's the promise we have from our supplier.

Once updated, the machines will not accept the old pound coins so you have to be careful what you wish for because in this area we have more of the old ones in circulation than the new ones.

Bear in mind though, that people can pay for their parking on card or by using their mobile phone, so we're not actually stopping people from parking at the moment."
