More Shows At Scarborough's OAT Is 'Great News'

Scarborough's MP Robert Goodwill says more concerts at the Open Air Theatre is great for the town's businesses.

As we told you last week, the venue's been given permission to increase the number of shows each year from 12 to 30.

Up to 20 of them can be between May and September, with the remainder spread throughout the rest of the year.

Robert Goodwill MP said:

"It's great that we're going to have more concerts, it's great that the opportunities that the Open Air Theatre affords will be available not just in the peak season, but also some of these concerts will be held outside of that peak time which I think will be great for guest houses, restaurants and all the other businesses that benefit when there's a big concert on.

I think the challenge in Scarborough has always been about attracting people to come out of peak season, there's no problem getting people here in July and August when the weather is fine.

I think it's great that the council have been so successful in investing money in this facility. There were many people at the start who said it was a mistake, but I think that this is really starting to show that that was a very wise decision to make and we're starting to see the benefits."
