Scarborough Street Trade Policy Set-Back

Scarborough Street Trade Policy Set-Back

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 6:02am 16th December 2016.

A new policy to tackle rogue traders in Scarborough has hit a set-back.

It follows a Scarborough Borough Council cabinet meeting earlier this week, which ultimately rejected the idea put forward.

The original proposals outlined that it would be a five day policy, only covering Monday to Friday, however cabinet confirmed that if they were to pass this policy, it would have to be changed to cover all seven days a week.

Ammendments will now be made to the policy before it is put up for consultation.

"Cabinet made it clear that it's all well and good have a street trading policy that covers Monday to Friday, but what happens at weekends?

"To be honest I didn't have an answer to that. Leader of the Council, Councillor Bastiman, made it clear that we shouldn't agree to this if we aren't carrying out any enforcement.

"There's no point in creating a crocodile that doesn't have any teeth.

"But I just want to say to the people of Scarborough, we have a bit of work to do, we are getting on with it, and if we can get it right then it will come back.

"But cabinet did say, if it's not a seven day policy, it's not worth the paper it's written on."
