Images to be Projected onto Scarborough's Futurist Theatre

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 6:01am 10th December 2016.

Scarborough's Futurist Theatre is to become a film venue later on Saturday.

The 'Save the Futurist' group will be projecting footage on to the theatre's cladding to raise awareness of their campaign to stop the building being demolished.

On their Facebook page the group say..

"we will be flyering in town for most of the day. Our recent media publicity campaign is to basically reach out to the local people who don't necessarily use social media and aren't completely aware of what the Save the Futurist Campaign are looking to achieve. Then at 4pm we will be projecting some footage onto the cladding of the Futurist Theatre. This is not a rally of any sort just good old fashioned public awareness from the people who care about our towns heritage. There will be a few of us around all day and at 4pm down by the Futurist so if any members of the public have any questions we will be on hand to talk to."

In the leaflet they will be handing out the group call on local residents to write to their councillor ahead of a meeting on January 9th where councillors will be discussing a report on 'the cost and methodology of clearing the Futurist site to pave the way for the redevelopment'.

In a statement issued earlier this week Scarborough Borough Council Leader Derek Bastiman said that

"The Futurist will be replaced by a world class £20m exciting visitor attraction involving Flamingo Land Limited, one of the UK’s most innovative leisure operators.

Their principle theme park attraction already attracts more visitors to Yorkshire than any other attraction and in 2015 was the seventh most visited attraction in the country."

The Save the Futurist group issued a four page document outlining their aims earlier in the month.

The document states:

"We wish to see the Futurist fully modernised and beautifully restored as a central part of the tourism and cultural provision for both the town and the wider region.

We also believe that an updated Futurist Theatre, re-fitted as a world class facility, would bring untold economic benefits to each and every resident of Scarborough; theatregoer or not."

The group are hoping to set up a Charitable Trust.
