Lantern Making Workshops In Whitby And Scarborough

Lantern Making Workshops In Whitby And Scarborough

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 6:00am 22nd October 2016.

A free lantern-making session takes place today in Whitby.

Animated Objects are behind the idea and the workshop is being held at the library from 10am until 12pm.

The workshop in Scarborough takes place at Peasholm Park at the same time.

It's all for two lantern parades that are set to take place in Whitby and Scarborough as part of upcoming winter festivals.

Local people are invited to contribute to the parades by making their own lanterns.

The event in Whitby is as part of the Christmas Festival on 18 November whilst the Scarborough parade is as part of the Moonlight and Song Festival on December 2.

Dawn Dyson-Threadgold is the creative director at Animated Objects and says it's something to look forward to.

"This will be a major event in the town's calendar and a great opportunity to celebrate Whitby's local community in a family celebration of the town's identity and heritage."

Lee Threadgold is the artistic director,

"The event will celebrate Scarborough's communities, and will be a beautiful start to the festive season for families. We'll be encouraging different generations to take part with each participating group."

Materials will be provided at at the workshops but participants are asked to bring a two-litre plastic drinks bottle to form the basis of the lantern.
