New Role For Scarborough and Whitby MP

New Role For Scarborough and Whitby MP

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 7:01am 18th July 2016.

Prime Minister Theresa May has given Scarborough and Whitby's MP a new role in her government.

Robert Goodwill is now working in the Home Office as Minister of State for Immigration.

The new job comes after his three years as a Junior Transport Minister.

Mr Goodwill says he's got a tough task ahead of him following the Brexit vote.

He said:

"Immigration Minister is probably one of the key roles in the administration that Theresa May has formed and I'm under no illusions of what a challenge it will be to get those decisions right. I look forward to that challenge and certainly a number of colleagues who've telephoned me have wished me luck and said that I've been given one of the toughest jobs in the government and that I should take that as a personal compliment.

"Given the result of the referendum, one of the great challenges facing our country is the issue of immigration - how we can balance the needs of our economy but at the same time look at how immigration put pressure on public services. A lot of those decisions will be dependent on the EU negotiations because obviously we're going to have a new relationship with the 27 states."
