Planning permission has now been granted to build a £5 million ditch around Filey.

It's part of the town's Flood Alleviation Scheme, which it's hoped will start being built at the start of next year.

The ditches or 'swales' will carry the water down into temporary holding areas where it'll discharge at a more controlled rate either into the sea or the town's drainage system.

Scarborough Borough Council's planning committee unanimously approved the application today.

Councillor Mike Cockerill is the portfolio holder for flood protection at the council, he said:

"It is a major step in the right direction. The next step is that a project appraisal report will be submitted to the environment agency to get their technical approval. This should then lead to the confirmation that we have the rest of the funding available. Then we will begetting interested companies to put forward tenders."
