Bridlington's Dad's Army Smashes UK Box Offices

The new Dad's Army film, which was largely shot in and around Bridlington, has made more than £2 million during its opening weekend.

That's according to figures from the British Film Institution, which show it was the second biggest grossing movie in UK Box Offices from last Friday to Monday.

It was shown in 585 cinemas.

Much of the filming took place in and around Brid's Old Town and other nearby locations on the Yorkshire coast..

Through investment, Screen Yorkshire helped bring the cast including Toby Jones, Bill Nighy and Catherine Zeta-Jones here for filming in 2014..

Chief Executive Sally Joynson said:

"We're absolutely delighted, this film could not be performing better than it is - it's a huge success. It's really interesting because it opened to fairly mixed reviews from the critics but audiences have flocked to it and the feedback that we've had has been terrific.

"When you've got filming on your doorstep, particularly with something as high profile as this,  it promotes a huge sense of pride in those locations. But more importantly is what it does for the town's economy. These films have quite a long tail in terms of tourism. We hope very much that people will come to visit places like Bridlington and the Yorkshire coast".
