Future of University Campus Scarborough Still Uncertain

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 7:21am 1st February 2016.

It's now three weeks since the University of Hull announced its handover of the Scarborough campus on Filey Road was off.

The future of the University Scarborough Campus remains in doubt.

The University announced in 2014 it was going to leave the site.

At the time, the borough council's bid in conjunction with Coventry University was rejected..

As yet there's been no more information on what will happen next or when..

Council Leader Derek Bastiman said:

"It isn't just communication with us that's important, it's communication with accommodation providers and the supply chain to the campus. People need reassurance and confidence in ordering supplies and ongoing improvements to properties they have out for rent.

"I would still like to see it being used as an educational facility, but until they come out and explain fully what their intentions are with the site, we can't make a comment. Unfortunately, as Leader, people will be expecting me to make a comment and as soon as I have the information to hand I will be making as positive a comment as I can".

Dr Giles Davidson, Acting Principal, University Campus Scarborough, said:

"The University of Hull is continuing to review the options for the future of the Scarborough campus on Filey Road. Resolving the future of the campus remains a priority for the University and it continues to work hard to make progress. University leaders are conscious of the long and illustrious history of the Filey Road campus as a place of learning in Scarborough.

"It is important to us to review the options properly in a considered way, and the University has not ruled out a partnership with another organisation. The options under consideration are commercially sensitive and we are unable to say more about these at this stage. We will keep all our stakeholders updated as soon as there is any news".
