New Sports Project for Scarborough Borough

New Sports Project for Scarborough Borough

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 1:10pm 11th January 2016. (Updated at 7:00am 12th January 2016)

A new Sport England funded Active Coast & Country sports programme is all set for its official launch this weekend and will start operating across the Borough of Scarborough this month.

The three year multi-sports programme will be delivered by a team of Community Sport Activators who will be equipped with everything needed to provide opportunities for people to participate in informal sporting activity.

Matt Hewison, Scarborough Borough Council Sports Development Officer said:

“We are very grateful to Sport England for the funding. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to deliver some new activity in different parts of the borough, increase participation in sport and improving health and well-being.

“We have employed a team which is highly qualified and experienced in delivering sport and is really looking forward to getting out in the community and helping people get active. The team has been busy putting together an initial programme of activity, which will evolve and develop as the project does.”

The team is working with a number of national governing bodies to see how it can adopt other delivery schemes in order to support the borough’s existing grassroots clubs. An example of this would be the Play Touch Rugby League programme to support player development at Scarborough Pirates Amateur Rugby League Football Club. While still at the feasibility stage, the team is also hoping to introduce the very popular ‘parkrun’ events later this year - ‘parkrun’ organises weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. The free events are open to everyone and are safe and easy to take part in.

The Active Coast & Country sports programme has been funded by Sport England via its Community Sport Activation Fund, with additional funding from the Football Association, Yorkshire Coast Homes and Scarborough Borough Council.

The programme will be officially launched on Saturday 16 January in the Brunswick Centre, Scarborough from 10am to 12pm. The team will be available to talk to people about what the project plans to deliver and give them ideas for what activity they might be interested in. There will also be an official cheque presentation from Sport England at 11.15am.
