Scarborough MP's Reassurance Over Rail Service

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 6:03am 1st July 2014.

Scarborough could actually benefit from planned changes to the rail system.

That's according to the town's MP and Transport Minister Robert Goodwill.

We told you last week how there are no current plans to electrify the track between York and Scarborough, when the line beyond York is proposed to become electric in 2018.

There are concerns within the town that this would mean Scarborough becomes 'cut off' from the rest of the region, meaning fewer visitors by rail, which would have an adverse impact on the town's economy.

But Mr Goodwill says there are three options to get around the problem.

Firstly, he explains there could be 'bi-modal' trains in operation, that are able to switch between electric and diesel.

He says if the York - Scarborough line did become a 'branch line', it could be a "blessing in disguise", because there would be no restriction on the number of services that could operate between the two destinations, meaning it would be better off than it is currently.

Mr Goodwill adds that the line still could be electrified all the way to Scarborough.
