Decades after the idea was first put forward, villagers in Bempton and Buckton will soon have a new village hall.

After a National Lottery grant of £408,000, work is now underway on the building, which is situated between the two villages.

It should be finished by the end of the year.

Councillor Richard Burton, who's been involved with the project, said: "The village has been in the position where it's been chasing a village hall for the last 30 years. To finally find ourselves being able to commence building the hall is a great moment, and it's great for the village. It will really become a community facility.

"We've got a lot of older folk in the village and it will provide an opportunity for them to meet and take part in various activities. It'll be great, it will provide a welcome addition to what we've got in the village."
