Dear Friends,

We are delighted to announce that Gelong Thubten is visiting Kagyu Samye Dzong Scarborough on Sunday 22nd September 11.00am - 4.30pm, to talk about his new book 'A Monk's Guide to Happiness: Meditation in the 21st Century'.

A Monk’s Guide to Happiness: Meditation in the 21st Century By Gelong Thubten - Talk & Book Signing

A day of talks and meditation instruction with Gelong Thubten

'How to be Happy' - insights from Gelong Thubten’s new bestselling book 'A Monk’s Guide to Happiness: Meditation in the 21st Century'.

The day will consist of Gelong Thubten giving a combination of talks and guided meditation practice, suitable for everyone. At the end of the afternoon there will be a book signing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

The talks will explore how to be truly happy. What is the nature of happiness, and what are our cultural attitudes to happiness and suffering? How can meditation and mindfulness practices help us to train our minds, so that we can find unshakeable strength even when faced with times of stress?

There will be meditation instruction as well as practical methods for developing compassion and forgiveness.

Gelong Thubten’s new book has become a break-out bestseller. The book demystifies the practices of meditation and mindfulness with easy to follow exercises, showing how such techniques can bring sustainable happiness to our busy lives.

In the book, Thubten shows a clear understanding of what brings lasting happiness rather than the short-term, unsatisfying type of ‘buzz’ - which ultimately leaves us hungry for more. He explains how meditation can help us to master our thoughts so we can achieve true inner fulfilment, something especially challenging in our frantic modern world.

Thubten told the press, “I wrote this book because I am passionate about helping people realise they can choose happiness, and I wanted to show how this can be learned through the power of meditation. I want to help bring meditation into the heart of people’s daily lives, not only to reduce stress and gain greater mastery over thoughts and emotions, but also to discover the mind’s deep potential for unconditional compassion and freedom. Happiness is inside us all, waiting.

Gelong Thubten directs Samye Dzong Scarborough. He ordained as a Buddhist monk 26 years ago at Samye Ling, and his training has included spending over six years in intensive, isolated meditation retreats, the longest of which was four years long. He has studied under some of the most experienced Tibetan masters.

He spent 20 years as the late Akong Tulku Rinpoche’s secretary and assistant, and he teaches at many of our centres.

Thubten provides meditation courses to the Silicon Valley tech giants and many other global companies, also to schools, major universities, hospitals and prisons. He is a world pioneer, as he introduced these techniques into the corporate sector over 20 years ago, before the mindfulness trend had emerged. His approach includes the development of compassion, which greatly enhances the benefits of the training.

He previously collaborated on the book ‘How to be Human’ with Ruby Wax and neuroscientist Ash Ranpura.

‘Thubten is a very generous and kind monk who writes with the lived honesty and humour of someone who has experienced the wisdom he shares. His writing is full of inspiration but also the pragmatism needed to form a sustainable practice. His book clearly illustrates why we all need meditation and mindfulness in our lives.

Gelong Thubten’s book is as warm, wise and generous as the man himself. We’ve never needed a voice like his more.

‘Compelling to read, yet full of profound wisdom, this wonderful book rationally describes how our mind functions and how we can cultivate the habit of happiness.

‘Thubten is able to explain meditation using clear language and an approach which really speaks to our modern tech-infused lives. With openness, humility and humour he delivers a deep message that will resonate in our modern culture.

‘Gelong Thubten's wonderful book provides a bracing challenge to our search for instant gratification and “instant” happiness, and a lucid, practical, step-by-step path to contentment and a genuine and lasting peace of mind.

Film Studies: 'More Iconic Films Revisited'

Monday 23rd September, 2019 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Tel: 0300 303 3464

Stephen Joseph Theatre
YO11 1JW

Often quoted, referenced or even spoofed, there are some films we feel we are all supposed to have seen - why? Do all these 'iconic films' really deserve their reputation? We examine why some continue to grow into 'cultural corner stones' whilst others will perhaps never be greater than the sum of their parts. But for a few key references, are some once iconic movies already now fading from memory? What does it take to be a truly iconic film and what do we really understand by the term in the first place?

A fresh selection of iconic cinema suitable for beginners and returners. If in receipt of benefit you may be able to attend for free. 10 Sessions with a break for half term.

Birthdays Past, Birthdays Present

Stephen Joseph Theatre
YO11 1JW

It’s Mickey’s 80th birthday and he and his wife Meg are awaiting the arrival of their son, Adrian, and his new (and latest!) fiancée, Grace.

Adrian has, according to his parents, a certain reputation regarding women and they feel meek, mild-mannered Grace should surely be warned of this. But are things really as they appear? Be prepared, as birthday follows birthday, to be amazed as the truth is finally revealed about Adrian, the suburban closet Lothario!

As ingenious in its construction as any of his previous plays, Birthdays Past, Birthdays Present is the 83rd play from the pen of one of Britain’s greatest playwrights. This year is not only his 80th birthday, but also the 60th anniversary of his playwriting debut – The Square Cat, his first professionally produced play, opened at Scarborough’s Library Theatre on 30 July 1959.
