Echoes of the Danube:
The Flow of Habsburg Power

Power and influence flowed from 17th-century Vienna and across the Holy Roman Empire. The Imperial capital was a hub of Italianate music and culture, with many musicians recruited directly from Venice and Rome. It is no surprise that archives across former Habsburg lands include works by Italians such as Rigatti, Rovetta, Sances, Pandolfi- Mealli and Bertali. Emperor Leopold I was himself an excellent composer (a second son, he was never expected to rule so was trained in all the liberal arts). His Regina coeli is an expressive testament to the far-reaching influence of Italian music. Composers from north of the Alps could evertheless flourish in this environment, as evidenced by the success of contrasting composers like Muffat, Biber, Johann Schenck and the Franconian kapellmeister Johann Staden.

More details:
QUAKER PLANT SALE AND QUESTION TIME
Scarborough Quakers are holding a Garden Afternoon with a plant sale and Question Time with a panel of local gardeners on Saturday 26th May. Refreshments will also be on sale.
At the Friends' Meeting House, Quaker Close, Woodlands Drive, Scarborough, the plant sale will start at 1.30 pm with the Gardeners' Question Time from 2 - 3pm. The event will close at 4pm.
Dilys Cluer, who is one of the organisers of the event, explained,
'We need to raise more money for the Quakers, and the proceeds of this event will be split equally between the local meeting and the national Quaker body (Britain Yearly Meeting) which supports Quaker work both at home and abroad. For example, in East Africa, Quakers help local people use strategies of active nonviolence to challenge corruption and abuses of power in Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi. This is one way of lessening the causes of violent conflict.
'Our Quaker Meeting House in Scarborough is really appreciated by the many groups which meet there as well as by ourselves, but as it is no longer new it is needing more repairs. Both the heating and the hearing loop system require improvement and this all costs money.
'We hope that people will enjoy the informal Gardeners' Question Time (which is free) and spend a bit of money with us on plants and refreshments. There will also be an opportunity to swap superfluous seeds. And if you're interested, you can also ask me more about Quakers.'
Admission to the Garden Afternoon is free and all are welcome.

James Weeks director

‘Quel augellin che canta...’
the EXAUDI Italian Madrigal Book

In recent years the vocal ensemble EXAUDI has received international acclaim for its brilliant and imaginative performances of 16th-century Italian madrigal repertoire, often paired with new madrigals by living composers. Here in Beverley they offer a (nearly) all-Renaissance programme, contrasting the sparkling virtuosity of the pastoral madrigal with the darker colours of the later expressionist style.

At the heart of this programme is an encounter between two of the madrigal’s greatest masters, Marenzio and Monteverdi, whose works in both lighter and more serious veins seem to shadow and echo each other, from twin settings of Quel augellin che canta to a pair of masterpieces: Marenzio’s Solo e pensoso, and Monteverdi’s Rimanti in pace.

Finally we hear two contemporary responses to the madrigal tradition, Salvatore Sciarrino’s breathtaking settings of Matsuo Bashō and Michael Finnissy’s dialogue with the tortured chromatics of Gesualdo.
