Filey Literature Festival

The Evron Centre
John Street
Filey

What do the Bard of Barnsley, the Daughter of the Dales and the Yorkshire Shepherdess have in common?

They’re all coming to Filey in May!

The headline acts for the inaugural Filey Literature Festival have been revealed and what a line up it is. On the weekend of 22-24 May the Evron Centre will host some of Yorkshire’s biggest literary figures.

Opening the festival on Friday 22 May is none other than the Bard of Barnsley, Ian McMillan. His distinctive tones can be heard on The Verb every week on BBC Radio 3 and Ian’s also a regular on BBC Breakfast, Coast, Pick of the Week, You & Yours, Last Word and The Arts Show. Previously, Ian was resident poet for English National Opera, UK Trade & Investment, Yorkshire TV’s Investigative Poet and Humberside Police’s Beat Poet. He is poet-in-residence for The Academy of Urbanism and Barnsley AFC. That’s quite a CV!

The Times Educational Supplement once described Ian as ‘the Shirley Bassey of performance poetry’. You may not know it, but Shirley Bassey’s mum was a Yorkshire lass, so we’re quite happy to regurgitate that quote.

The event is being sponsored by The Hylands Retirement Home. It is a long established, family run residential retirement home for the elderly, that provides residential care in an imposing Victorian building on our magnificent Crescent.

The Saturday, 23 May, headliner is a play ‘No Through Road’ that focusses on the life of the ‘Daughter of the Dales’ Hannah Hauxwell. The play, written and performed by Shelagh McKay and Karen McDonnell, follows the life of the 'daughter of the Dales' Hannah Hauxwell. It was premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival of 2019. It is entitled ‘No Through Road’ and was inspired by the 1970s Yorkshire Television documentaries which profiled Pennine farmer Hannah Hauxwell's tough life in the hills of Baldersdale. She lived alone on her remote smallholding until 1988, when she moved to a retirement cottage in the nearby village of Cotherstone. She died in 2018 at the age of 91 and there was an outpouring of grief from her fans all over the world.

Closing the festival on Sunday 24 May is another famous Dales woman, Amanda Owen, the Yorkshire Shepherdess. Amanda is a hill farmer, writer, photographer, public speaker and mother of nine. She lives a busy life with her husband Clive and their family at Ravenseat in Swaledale, one of the highest, and remotest, hill farms in England.

After being featured in the popular ITV Series The Dales, Amanda began documenting the story of her farming life and subsequently published three bestselling books.

Filey Lions are kindly sponsoring Amanda’s visit to Filey. The Lions are part of the world's largest voluntary unpaid service organisation with 1.3 million members in 48,000 clubs serving in 208 countries and geographical areas. Every penny they collect through fund-raising goes direct to support good causes.

Tickets are on sale for Ian McMillan at Filey Post Office; tickets for Hannah Hauxwell and Amanda Owen are on sale at Mrs Bishop’s Doggy Deli. The latter are also taking telephone bookings on 01723 512389.
