Saint Catherine’s is inviting people of all ages to come together in support of patient care at the Sunrise Walk 2019.
The event will take place on Sunday September 22, starting at 6am from the main hospice site in Throxenby Lane.
The 6.5-mile circular route around both North and South Bays will give walkers chance to experience the beautiful Scarborough sunrise, while remembering loved ones and raising essential funds for Saint Catherine’s.
Event organiser Rhiannon Hunt said: “The Sunrise Walk is a wonderful way to support Saint Catherine’s. We need your help to provide our 16 services free of charge to patients and their families.
“Together we can make a difference to people in our area living with terminal illnesses.”
By raising £20, you could help provide an in-patient’s meals and refreshments for one day. Or £200 in sponsorship could pay for a patient to attend our Wellbeing Centre for one day.
Entry costs £15 for adults and £5 for under 16s, which includes an event T-shirt, refreshments at the Harbour Bar and breakfast at Saint Catherine’s at the end of the walk.
The Sunrise Walk is sponsored by McCarthy & Stone and supported by the Harbour Bar.

Filey Vets and Operation K9 are hosting a dog walk meet at Filey Beach on Sunday 22nd September.
We hope to raise awareness of Canine Arthritis, helping to educate dog owners of the symptoms and treatment available.
It's only £5 to join us and in return you will get a goody bag worth nearly £10!
All dogs welcome, an opportunity to meet vets, nurses and therapists and chat to owner dog owners.
80% of dogs over 8 suffer with arthritis and there is lots we can do about it, owners often think slowing down and stiffness is due to old age, but arthritis is a disease which can be treated and managed like any other condition.
Just turn up on the day to join and pay £5 cash, any additional sponsorship will be greatly appreciated too.
Please keep dogs on leads, walkers can walk as far as they like.
We are meeting at the lifeboat station/cafe areas of Filey Seafront at 11am.

A day of talks and meditation instruction with Gelong Thubten

'How to be Happy' - insights from Gelong Thubten’s new bestselling book 'A Monk’s Guide to Happiness: Meditation in the 21st Century'.

The day will consist of Gelong Thubten giving a combination of talks and guided meditation practice, suitable for everyone. At the end of the afternoon there will be a book signing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

The talks will explore how to be truly happy. What is the nature of happiness, and what are our cultural attitudes to happiness and suffering? How can meditation and mindfulness practices help us to train our minds, so that we can find unshakeable strength even when faced with times of stress?

There will be meditation instruction as well as practical methods for developing compassion and forgiveness.

Gelong Thubten’s new book has become a break-out bestseller. The book demystifies the practices of meditation and mindfulness with easy to follow exercises, showing how such techniques can bring sustainable happiness to our busy lives.

In the book, Thubten shows a clear understanding of what brings lasting happiness rather than the short-term, unsatisfying type of ‘buzz’ - which ultimately leaves us hungry for more. He explains how meditation can help us to master our thoughts so we can achieve true inner fulfilment, something especially challenging in our frantic modern world.

Thubten told the press, “I wrote this book because I am passionate about helping people realise they can choose happiness, and I wanted to show how this can be learned through the power of meditation. I want to help bring meditation into the heart of people’s daily lives, not only to reduce stress and gain greater mastery over thoughts and emotions, but also to discover the mind’s deep potential for unconditional compassion and freedom. Gelong Thubten directs Samye Dzong Scarborough. He ordained as a Buddhist monk 26 years ago at Samye Ling, and his training has included spending over six years in intensive, isolated meditation retreats, the longest of which was four years long. He has studied under some of the most experienced Tibetan masters.

He spent 20 years as the late Akong Tulku Rinpoche’s secretary and assistant, and he teaches at many of our centres.

Thubten provides meditation courses to the Silicon Valley tech giants and many other global companies, also to schools, major universities, hospitals and prisons. He is a world pioneer, as he introduced these techniques into the corporate sector over 20 years ago, before the mindfulness trend had emerged. His approach includes the development of compassion, which greatly enhances the benefits of the training.

He previously collaborated on the book ‘How to be Human’ with Ruby Wax and neuroscientist Ash Ranpura.
