Learn about serial killers you’ve never heard of before as Jennifer explores one of forensic psychology’s most troubling topics.

This is an academic talk which will draw on brain scans, medical records, journal papers, statistics and case studies to provide even the most avid true crime or forensic psychology fan with deeper understanding of the phenomenon.

During this talk, you will discover how serial killers are classified. What are the differences between Lust like the BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill) Killer, and Visionary killers such as David Berkowitz (Son of Sam)?
Jennifer will also debunk common serial killer myths – you may be surprised by what you learn! Jennifer will use statistical profiling to explore the truth behind the commonly-cited profile of a serial killer as being a white male in his mid-to-late twenties.

How common are homicidal fantasies? Have you ever fantasised about killing someone? You may be surprised by the results of the research!

Why do women fall in love with known serial killers? Jennifer will discuss the clinical knowledge surrounding why serial killers gain admirers, fan mail, and even spouses in light of their atrocious crimes.
You will also investigate the phenomenon of killer couples such as Fred and Rose West and The Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, as well exploring the Folie à deux syndrome, a.k.a ‘shared psychosis’.

Jennifer will also explain to you why you’re so fascinated by serial killers!

Hackness Village Hall

Would you like to understand your horse’s behaviour and how best to train him?

A better understanding of horse behaviour, how horses learn and how to recognise your horse's body language can help you improve your relationship with your own horse and give you the confidence to make better-informed choices about riding, handling, training and competing.

This one day workshop is an introduction to horse behaviour and body language. The day will include presentations as well as observational exercises with horses. You will benefit from an improved understanding of how your own horse behaves and gain new practical skills to help keep, manage and train your horse.

You will learn about:

• different aspects of horse behaviour (including play, sleep, their social life, eating, drinking, movement, reproduction etc)
• the horse's behavioural needs
• tips to improve your horse’s behaviour and reduce stress
• equine communication
• reading equine body language
• how to recognise pain, stress and fear
• how to assess emotional thresholds
• practical observation of the horse’s body language

Would you like to learn how best to train your horse?

Horse owners are constantly bombarded with marketing messages from a wide variety of horse trainers promoting their ‘method’ of training horses. But how can you assess whether these methods are effective or suitable for you and your horse?

Equine behaviourist Justine Harrison will guide you through this minefield by teaching you how horses learn and the principles of training so that you can make informed decisions for yourself. In a combination of classroom and practical sessions with horses you will learn about effective handling and training techniques. You will benefit from an improved understanding of how your own horse learns and gain new practical skills to help train your horse effectively.

This one day workshop will include presentations and practical exercises with horses, including:

• The principles of training
• Why different techniques may or may not work
• An introduction to Learning Theory – the science of how horses learn
• The effects different training methods have on the horse
• How to create the best environment for your horse to learn
• How to assess your horse’s emotional thresholds
• Training using LIMA (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive) principles
• What makes a great trainer
• How to make training fun for you and your horse
• Retraining your horse to enjoy a fearful task (eg. clippers, vaccinations, saddle)
• When to stop training

These workshops are aimed at horse owners, students and equestrian professionals interested in learning more about horse behaviour.

CPD attendance certificates will be available, please email Justine if you would like one.

Tickets are limited and need to be purchased in advance, no tickets will be available on the day.
