Haydn String Quartet Op 51 "Seven Last Words"

Celebrating their 50th anniversary year, the Fitzwilliam Quartet returns to Beverley to present one of the most extraordinary works in the repertory. Mixing the inspired musical genius of Haydn with a series of short reflections written by Canon Peter Moger, this afternoon promises to engage the soul as well as the mind.

“We have performed this work in a wide range of venues, from Cadiz where the work was commissioned, through to cathedrals, tiny country churches and modern concert halls across the world. Wherever and whenever, the work offers new insights into the music and what it represents; proving that the Passion story, and Haydn’s musical response to it, is as relevant and meaningful for non-believers as it is to Christians of whatever creed.” Alan George

“[FSQ] are Britain’s premier string quartet ensemble …the pride of that nation.” Fanfare

The festival finishes with a flourish of Iberian passion from this remarkably engaging young group. Drawing on music from the Renaissance, we feel the hot winds of Spain drawing together stories of desire and passion taken from songbooks preserved throughout history which reveal a world of demons, saints and people struggling to survive – just as we do today!
