Whitby Pavilion Christmas Concert

Saturday 8th December, 2018 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Tel: 01947 458899

West Cliff
YO21 3EN

Join us on Saturday 8 December for a fun and family friendly Christmas Concert with talents from:

Simply Brass

The players all live in Scarborough and it's surrounding area, although many have moved to the area over the years from various parts of the country for work and family reasons. They have varied musical backgrounds - a number have played in top Brass Bands throughout the country, a couple have music degrees and others have played for years for the sheer enjoyment of it. The group range in age from early 20's to 70 something and includes teachers, lawyers, a policeman, mothers and a few retired ones!
Simply Brass have an extensive repertoire of music ranging from classical and standard Brass Band favourites, to music from films, to popular music and finally a bit of swing thrown in to round off a varied and exciting programme.

The Dalesmen Singers

The choir has a great tradition of music, friendship and helping others. Dalesmen concerts have enabled many different charities to raise funds. We currently have an eclectic mix of members in the choir with different backgrounds and musical experience, but it all comes together as part of the Choir ethos and love of singing.
The Dalesmen Singers strive to achieve a high standard of performance in concerts and are able to achieve this through the humour and talent of a very experienced and talented Musical Director, Steve Maltby. New members should not be put off by the desire for high standards as newcomers, regardless of musical experience are given considerable help to learn their parts and quickly fit in to the Choir. All of this and a wide musical repertoire mean that we are able to entertain and enjoy all kinds of situations that range from Church and village hall concerts to private parties and public performances in prestigeous venues here and abroad.

Stakesby Primary Academy Choir

Stakesby Community Primary School was opened in September 1970 and is situated on the west side of Whitby with views across the town to the Abbey and the sea. It caters for approximately 200 pupils from nursery (age3) to Year 6 (age 11). Onsite preschool provision is planned to be available from the age of 2 starting in 2018-19. The school recently converted to Academy status (from September 2018), joining our long-standing learning partners, the Enquire Learning Trust.
The choir is directed by the Headteacher - Roy Gunning, who is also the principal trumpet player in Simply Brass.

Tickets: £4 (Adults), £3 (Children, Concessions & Friends of Whitby Pavilion)

Alice in Wonderland

Saturday 8th December, 2018 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Tel: 01723 370541

Stephen Joseph Theatre
YO11 1JW

Once upon a time there was a little girl who ran free in the wilds of her imagination, meeting Cheshire Cats, Mad Hatters, White Rabbits and any amount of talking cards. Her Wonderland was real, and she’d never forget it.

Until she grew up and did.

This year, the team that brought you the smash hit Christmas shows A (Scarborough) Christmas Carol and Pinocchio invite you to Boyes on a crowded Christmas Eve, as Alice falls down the rabbit hole once again to find she’s still a child in Wonderland… but Wonderland has changed.

And not for the better.

Can she save her wonderful friends? Will she get back to her kids, who she left by a fire extinguisher near the stock room? And can you get decent phone reception at the Mad Hatter’s house?

Daft, exciting and filled with brilliant songs, Alice in Wonderland is a delight for all the family, and their rabbits.*

*The rabbit thing might not be true. Who knows what rabbits are into? Leave them behind.

J.S. Bach Christmas Oratorio

Written in 1734 when Bach was at the height of his considerable powers, the Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) is rarely heard in its complete form. Six cantatas written for the feast days of Christmas and New Year present Bach at his most festive and vibrant. Some of Bach’s largest orchestral forces are contrasted with exquisitely beautiful solo instrumental and vocal music. Bound together, Bach’s compendium of evolving musical style powerfully encapsulates rituals of belief, the diversity of the human spirit and an ecstatic joy in the Christmas message.

“the Christmas message was harmonised into a
pure shout of joy” Guardian

It is the 2018 St Uffing Village Pantomime, and this year it is Cinderella. The St Uffing Players Independent Drama group (StUPID) have been working hard for months trying to perfect their lines. The Director/ Producer, Miss Eltow (The Headmistress of the local school) has been tireless in her efforts and the rest of the cast are now just about ready to take to the stage at last.

Tonight is the final dress rehearsal, to which a number of local dignitaries have been invited. Also there will be Russell Sprout, a journalist and theatre critic for the local newspaper. He is known for being cantankerous and negative about practically everything - he was once a rising star of Fleet Street, working on the Daily Mail and being groomed for stardom until his fondness for lunchtime drinks began to wear the patience even of the notoriously hard drinking editor he worked for. He was sacked and resigned himself to the rest of his career working for the provincial press.

The dress rehearsal has now finished, and the cast are just waiting their curtain call. A loudspeaker announcement is heard:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, that concludes the 2012 St Uffing Pantomime. Cinderella went on to live happily ever after with her Prince Charming, while the Ugly Sisters spent the rest of their lives cleaning out the kitchens in the castle".

The pantomime may have been a strictly amateur performance, but there is drama a-plenty when the critic Mr Sprout is found dead, stabbed between the shoulder blades by the stiletto of a crystal slipper!

£27.95 per person to include a 3 course evening meal!
1 free place for bookings of 15 or more people.

Christian Aid Concert by A Cappella

Saturday 8th December, 2018 7:30pm to 8:00pm

Tel: 01723 882159

Westborough Methodist Church
YO11 1TS

A Cappella are holding a concert at Westborough Methodist Church on Saturday 8th December at 7.30pm. The proceeds will all go to Christian Aid’s 2018 Christmas Appeal. Under the musical direction of Ralph Earwicker and with guest soloist Rev Mike Leigh, the group will be singing a varied programme of seasonal songs and carols.

The focus for the Christmas Appeal this year is ‘Peacemakers’. Peace, we know all too well, is broken every day - but it is also being built every day through the tireless work of peacemakers across the world. Funds raised will help bring peace to families affected by violence and conflict all over the world. For example, by supporting the work of Diana Abbas, a psychologist providing counselling at a children's centre for young Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, children who are scarred by conflict in the homeland they have had to flee. 'Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God', Jesus told his followers. We can all be peacemakers this Christmas, locally in our community and family, and globally by supporting the Christmas Appeal.

Entry to the concert is by ticket (phone Chris Garforth 01723 882159) or donation at the door (suggested minimum £5).
