Mental Health Charity Scarborough Survivors is holding an open day on Thursday 1 February to coincide with national Time to Talk Day. During this year, 1 in 4 people will be affected by mental illness yet the stigma associated with this means that people who are mentally unwell often keep this to themselves and become isolated and more unwell instead of getting the help and support that they need.

We are inviting anyone aged 16 or to drop-in and share their experiences of mental illness with us. Our volunteers will share their stories and demonstrate how talking about their mental health has helped them.

Time to Talk is part of a national initiative called Time to Change and the event will be supported by a 'Chatter Box' - resources that make it easier for people to talk about mental health.

Anyone who would like to call in to our resource centre between 11.30am and 4.30pm will receive a warm welcome and refreshments are available.

Scarborough Survivors is inviting people to become mental health champions. We have small grants available for anyone living in North Yorkshire to apply to run an event or activity at which people talk about mental health. Anyone who has experienced mental illness can get in touch with us for more information and an application pack.

The short story is making a comeback - varied, rule-breaking and fun, interest in this once side-lined form is expanding. Writing a compelling short is a craft within itself and sometimes regarded as a ‘dark art’ - Does every word really need to count? When does the story really start? When should it end? We explore the varying forms, cross the genres and consider the outlets. There’s never been a better time to find inspiration and get motivated, if you have an idea for a story - now is the time.
This course runs every Thursday evening for 10 weeks, with a break for half term.

Get ready for a night of solid gold 60s hits and 80s contemporary genius as the Roy Orbison Story celebrates the musical legacy of The Big O.

He's the man with the sunglasses and the black suit who delivered some of the world's darkest and most emotional ballads, yet Texas-born Roy Orbison remains one of the most distinctive looking, and sounding performers in modern music, despite dying 30 years ago leaving others to bring his music to the concert stage.

But Barry Steele, who takes on the role in The Roy Orbison Story, comes with very great credentials and a genuine admiration for the Big "O". Now he is set to put the rock back into 'Roy Orbison' as he takes to the stage to commemorate this legend in The Roy Orbison Story 30 Year Special.

Expect what is being billed as an upbeat and contemporary slant on Orbison's legacy, as Barry Steele and Friends take audiences on a musical journey from the early Sun years right through to the late 1980s, when Orbison was experiencing a huge resurgence in popularity and worked with Bono, Bruce Springsteen and others including super group the Traveling Wilburys alongside former Beatle George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.

So get ready for a night of solid gold 60s hits and 80s contemporary genius as the Roy Orbison Story celebrates the musical legacy of The Big O. As well as the toe tapping sound of the music giant that is Roy Orbison, you'll hear the fantastic Barry Steele perform songs written by Roy Orbison, but never performed by him!

The production also features chart busting hits originally made famous by the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Jeff Lynne & ELO, George Harrison, Del Shannon and The Spencer Davis Group; Come and see us as there's plenty of rock with Roy! From Only the Lonely to The Traveling Wilburys, Barry Steele has been stunning audiences across the globe with his uncanny ability to recreate the vocal talents of the legendary Roy Orbison. This unmissable show will take you on a musical journey in time - don't miss out!
