Lifeboathouse
Foreshore Road
Scarborough
YO11 1PB

There’s something fishy going on at Scarborough RNLI.
The life-saving charity is cooking up a fundraising fish supper at Walkers fish restaurant in Ayton on Thursday 3 October.
It’s part of the RNLI’s annual national fish-supper campaign, which runs from 11-27 October.
Tickets cost £16.50 and can be bought at Walkers, the lifeboathouse shop and by ringing Colin Woodhead on 863666. A hundred places are available.
For each sale, Walkers will give £4 to the RNLI. The proceeds of a raffle will also go to the lifeboat.
Admission to the supper will be staggered, starting at 6.30pm and continuing at intervals. “People will enter every 20 or 30 minutes, explains Colin Woodhead, who chairs Scarborough RNLI.
Similar events will be taking place around the country at the same time. “We are encouraging people to get together with friends, family or their community and organise a fishy-themed, fun eating experience to raise vital funds to help save lives at sea”, says Colin. Fish suppers can be anywhere, including home.
Scarborough RNLI’s lifeboat operations manager Andy Volans says: “Hosting a fish supper is a great way for people to support the RNLI. It’s easy to sign-up, it’s fun and you can make the menu as simple or technical as you like, while spending time with your nearest and dearest.
“And of course, your donations will contribute towards equipment, crew kit or fuel for one of our lifeboats”.
The RNLI relies on the generosity of the public to fund its lifesaving services. Its volunteer lifeboat crew often sacrifice their precious meal times and special occasions at a moment’s notice – answering the call of their pagers to rescue those in need on the water.
In 2018, RNLI lifeboats launched 8,964 times, helping 9,412 people and saving 211 lives. On average, 26 people per day were saved (four more than in 2017).
The RNLI is encouraging people to share news of their events by using the hash tag #RNLIFishSupper and tagging @RNLI in posts.
Visit RNLI.org/FishSupper to sign up.

It’s Mickey’s 80th birthday and he and his wife Meg are awaiting the arrival of their son, Adrian, and his new (and latest!) fiancée, Grace.

Adrian has, according to his parents, a certain reputation regarding women and they feel meek, mild-mannered Grace should surely be warned of this. But are things really as they appear? Be prepared, as birthday follows birthday, to be amazed as the truth is finally revealed about Adrian, the suburban closet Lothario!

As ingenious in its construction as any of his previous plays, Birthdays Past, Birthdays Present is the 83rd play from the pen of one of Britain’s greatest playwrights. This year is not only his 80th birthday, but also the 60th anniversary of his playwriting debut – The Square Cat, his first professionally produced play, opened at Scarborough’s Library Theatre on 30 July 1959.

Why would anyone want to get closer to nature? What’s that about? It’s cruel. Vindictive. Nature will give you cancer, burn your house down then send a flood to wash away your family.

Love. Hate. Good. Evil. Nature. Nurture. Mag lives in a rustic cabin in the Canadian wilds, far from neighbours and further from her past. But when her estranged daughter Beth turns up on the doorstep having been freshly released from prison, the past becomes terrifyingly present. And it has teeth.

Beth came to ask Mag a question. But is she prepared for the answer? Can they really settle their scores? And can Mag keep an innocent party from being destroyed in the crossfire?

As a blizzard closes in and dangerous words are traded, Mag accepts a challenge from a most unexpected source and lights a fuse that looks set to blow both women sky high.

Written by Oliver Emanuel (The 306 Trilogy) and directed by the Traverse’s Gareth Nicholls (Ulster American), The Monstrous Heart is thrilling, chilling and witty, examining afresh the eternal question of whether we ever really change how we’re made.

Is it possible to kill our old selves and create someone new and better in their place?
