This role provides an opportunity to cover periods of staff holidays/sickness this is a flexible working role assisting with the provision of meals, snacks and other services to a high standard.


The purpose of this post is to assist with the provision of meals, snacks and other services to a high standard. To make sure patients and others’ catering needs are fully met. To ensure all catering areas are maintained to a specified high level of cleanliness and hygiene.



  1. To assist with; and to provide food production, presentation and services for patients, volunteers, visitors, staff and users of the Education Centre.
  2. To work closely with The Chef and other catering staff as a team, to provide the best offering with minimal supervision.
  3. To have an awareness of allergens contained in food.
  4. To assist The Chef in ordering products, food and non-food, stock control and rotation. Keeping appropriate records of orders, deliveries and waste.
  5. To act upon any advice distributed as an alert from the Food Standards Agency.
  6. The maintenance of cleanliness, to agreed high standards, in all catering areas including equipment. Awareness of and adherence to COSHH rules and regulations.
  7. To help maintain appropriate monitoring records for Health, Safety and Environmental Health purposes.
  8. To assist with the smooth and effective day to day running of the catering department.
  9. To assist in ensuring all catering equipment is kept in good working order and report any defects via a control system.
  10. To assist in ensuring the security in the Catering Department at all times.
  11. To assist with the supervision and allocation of work for volunteers and other staff in the catering areas.
  12. To visit patients in IPU, as required, offering them menu choices of the day. Encouraging them to share their food likes and dislikes, making the day’s offering appropriate to their dietary needs in conjunction with the nursing team.
  13. Ensure quality standards are reached and maintained.



Other Requirements of the Post

  1. To have or gain an understanding and basic knowledge of special dietary needs.
  2. To be flexible, providing absences cover for holidays and sickness when necessary.
  3. Be prepared to work unsocial hours, weekends and bank holidays (This may include Christmas and New Year)
  4. To attend hospice meetings, occasionally outside working hours, as required.
  5. To attend training courses, occasionally outside working hours, as directed.
  6. To assist with occasional Fundraising activities, including the attendance at events as requested and agreed.
  7. To adhere to basic food hygiene standards at all times.
  8. To carry out any other duties required by The Chef or any member of Saint Catherine’s Management Team.
