Grow Your Own Potatoes...

McCain is committed to making food that can be enjoyed as part of a healthy, balanced diet. And it all starts with the humble potato. As the largest purchaser of British potatoes, the company works with over 300 growers across the UK - and a number of their partnerships span three generations of farming families.Robert Goodwill MP harvesting potatoes with children at Goathland School

McCain has been supporting the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) Potatoes’ Grow Your Own Potatoes (GYOP) scheme for the past four years.

The GYOP scheme is a hands-on classroom experience, which teaches primary school children how potatoes grow and how they fit into a healthy, balanced diet. The content is linked to the National Curriculum and includes a variety of activities, from planting to harvesting, with schools able to compete regionally and nationally for the heaviest crop and largest potatoes grown.

Taking part is free and schools receive a complete growing kit with everything they need to grow two crops of potatoes.

Over two million primary school children across the UK have benefitted from this classroom experience since it launched 12 years ago, including a number of pupils along the Yorkshire Coast.
