Backing Scarborough’s University Technical College

Official Sponsor-Company...

McCain has been named as an official sponsor-company of Scarborough UTC, which opened last year.

Scarborough UTCThe state-of-the-art facility offers students aged 14 to 18 in the Scarborough area an opportunity to gain technical qualifications, GCSEs and A-Levels in a range of core subjects. Students can also study ICT, Robotics and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) based subjects, equipping them with relevant professional and technical skills together with outstanding employee credentials and leadership potential.

Training in STEM subjects can lead to a whole host of exciting careers, including software development, control systems and a wide range of engineering roles. The college is also a fantastic stepping stone to university, if graduates wish to continue their education.

The UTC works closely with a number of related employers in the area, which gives students an opportunity to see the subjects they’re studying being practiced in a real-life working environment. It also inspires youngsters to think about what career they may want in the future.

HR Director at McCain, Richard Smelt, says: “A number of roles in our company require skills in STEM subjects. Scarborough UTC will play a huge part in training students who we hope will one day be the bright sparks of McCain’s future.

“If you enrol at Scarborough UTC, you’ll have a number of opportunities to see what it’s like working for a global food manufacturer. You might like the look of our engineering apprenticeship scheme or want to learn more about the technical side of product development. You’ll quickly see that hundreds of STEM subject experts are needed to make the nation’s favourite potato products at McCain.

“As a responsible, family-owned company, we nurture the talents of our employees and strive to develop skills continuously throughout their career at McCain. As a Scarborough UTC partner, we see great value in investing the same support in the next generation of Scarborough’s workforce.”
