Family Fun at scarborough castle and whitby abbey

Discover this summer’s fun-filled family events with English Heritage. Watch Vikings in combat, daring knights in a joust or see Dracula performed live. Celebrate the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook's first expedition to the South Seas or discover history from both World Wars. This is all happening at the magnificent Scarborough Castle with its 3,000-year history and the gothic 7th century Whitby Abbey. You'll be spoilt for choice this Summer with English Heritage!

 

Whitby Abbey’s Captain Cook event

Takes place Saturday 7th - Sun 29th July 2018, every weekend (except 14 & 15 July) 

 

Visit Whitby Abbey to enjoy a specially commissioned play about Captain Cook by Time Will Tell theatre which will transport you back to the 18th century and the excitement of an age of exploration and discovery. Celebrate the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook's first expedition to the South Seas by visiting the great man’s home port of Whitby. It's here he learnt his seafaring skills and set sail on his famous voyage into the unknown. 11AM – 5PM, admissions prices apply.

Scarborough Wartime weekend

Scarborough Castle Wartime Weekend

Takes place: Saturday 7th - Sunday 29th July 2018

 

Discover history from both World Wars at Scarborough Castle on the weekend of the 28th & 29th July. Ask our soldiers about life during the war and see their weapons on display. Find out more about the recruitment process with our WW1 British Army Training Non-Commissioned Officer and join our Air Raid Warden on his journey of Civil Defence in WW2.

Members of the Home Guard will also be on hand to show you how you can stop a German tank using nothing more than household implements! Hear some popular 1940's tunes performed by 'The Honeybirds' and junior soldiers can see if they've got what it takes with our obstacle course.

With its stunning location and panoramic views over the dramatic Yorkshire coastline, the castle will be the pinnacle of your day out in Scarborough. Discover 3,000 years of history in the Master Gunner's House, play on the grassy 16-acre headland, and top your day off with a treat in our coffee shop. Admission prices apply.

Whitby Abbey's Dracula Event

Takes place: Every weekend from Saturday 4th August to Sunday 19th August

 

Join us at Whitby Abbey at weekends in August from 4th August - Think you know the story of Dracula? Think again.

To understand Bram Stoker's gothic story, you need to watch his legendary tale performed live in the ruins that inspired him. 

Catch a performance at 11AM, 1PM or 3PM. Admission prices apply.

Scarborough Castle Joust & Melee Tournament Event

Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th August

 

Join us at Scarborough Castle on Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th August for the Joust & Melee Tournament!

Jousting goes back to its roots in this no-holds-barred contest of strength, skill and horsemanship. Marvel at the power of our four daring knights as they battle it out in this authentic 13th-century competition. It’s every man for himself as, with only chainmail and a lance for protection, they compete for victory. 11AM – 5PM, admission prices apply.

Whitby Abbey Vikings Event

Come and face our marauding Vikings at Whitby Abbey this August bank holiday weekend!

Come and face our marauding Vikings as they continue their wave of terror along the north east coast.  Explore their encampment and witness spectacular displays of combat. Hear tales of daring conquests and learn about the weapons and skills which made the Vikings feared throughout Europe. There will even be a chance for your young warriors to learn some battle skills and take part in their own Viking skirmish! 11AM – 5PM, admission prices apply.
