How Lloyd Dowson began

Lloyd Dowson, Chartered Accountants, Tax and Business Advisors was founded over forty years ago in Bridlington and Scarborough. The family business began with 3 members of staff during the eighties and now has over 60 staff with a board of 5 directors, 2 of whom are home grown talent. Lloyd Dowson offer a range of services which include Accountancy, Audit, Business Management, Taxation, Payroll, Human Resources and Cloud Accounting.

Tax and business continuity are one of Lloyd Dowson’s specialist subjects and we are recognised nationally as a leisure sector expert. Our clients vary from sole traders, through to medium and large family businesses. As a family business we understand the demands that this can bring and that is why we are perfectly placed to help and support newly formed, established and expanding businesses.  

Lloyd Dowson are a registered training office for Chartered Accountants and have taught and mentored trainees for many years. We have a strong team ethos and encourage all team members to embrace the many opportunities that the business offers both at work and as part of our Staff Health and Wellbeing programme.

Lloyd Dowson have continued to grow the business and we opened a second office on Falsgrave Road in Scarborough in 2013.

Charlotte previously worked for a Big 4 firm in Assurance, she decided to move to Lloyd Dowson to further the variety in her day to day work as well as to work with the types of clients that she had previously enjoyed working with – local owner managed businesses. Whilst she continues to perform audits, she has also got involved with preparing year end accounts, tax computations, VAT returns and business plans which has been possible through the support that Lloyd Dowson has given her. 

Charlotte values the regular social and teambuilding events Lloyd Dowson hold to bring the team together. Having grown up in the local area, Charlotte appreciates working for a firm that is so actively involved in the local community; supporting and promoting local businesses as well as fundraising and supporting local charities.

Describe your career journey so far

It’s never too late to start your accountancy career. Having always had an interest in maths and numbers whilst at school but done nothing about it in my teens, I began my journey as an office junior. I joined a practice and started my Association of Accounting Technicians studies (AAT) and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2001. Since then I have worked in practice within Ryedale and on the East Coast.  


What are the benefits of working on the East Coast?

Location, location, location! I live in Pickering and when I was looking to move back to a practice position I could go in any direction, but the commute to the East Coast won out over driving to the inland cities. I’ve not been stuck in traffic once in the time I’ve worked at Lloyd Dowson and the views from the car are spectacular. There is a very wide range of businesses in this part of the country.


What opportunities have Lloyd Dowson provided?

I have the flexibility to work across our two offices in Bridlington and Scarborough, allowing client contact across our portfolio. The two offices are fully integrated across our communications and IT systems, giving access to our files wherever we work. Regular contact is so important to understanding our clients’ needs and we are encouraged to network, both with existing and potential clients, meeting them outside the formal setting of the professional office or the client’s premises.


How does Lloyd Dowson look after the Health and Wellbeing of their team?

There is a high level of support throughout the team with regular reviews to ensure that everyone is keeping well and have all the resources they need. The firm provides wellbeing training, fitness and yoga sessions, as well as promoting healthy lifestyles with step-count, water and fruit challenges.

Lloyd Dowson are fully committed to supporting the local communities in Bridlington, Scarborough and the surrounding areas. They do this by sponsoring a variety of community groups and organisations, from local sports clubs, such as the Bridlington Rugby Club to school sports teams and theatre groups such as the Scarborough YMCA.

Lloyd Dowson believe in nurturing future generations and take an active role in engaging with local schools and colleges. They deliver business workshops so that students can develop their understanding of the world of work and accountancy as a career choice.
