Posted by Richard Griffin at 11:29am Snowdrop Appeal - Annika's Story28th January 2014
Based at Scarborough Hospital, it will be a private space for families who lose a baby during birth or pregnancy. The Snowdrop Appeal launched last year, to fundraise towards that target. The Dowson family are keen supporters. Annika lost her daughter Gypsy in 2008. Annika and her mother-in-law Susan told me about their experiences. First, fundraising boss Maya Richardson explained more about the Snowdrop Apeal: If you'd like to know more, get involved or even feature in Annika's "Calendar Girls"-style calendar... here's all the details: www.york.nhs.uk/fundraising www.facebook.com/thesnowdropappeal (01723) 236210 charity.fundraising@york.nhs.uk.

Whitby Harbour, Scarborough's South Bay and Bridlington Harbour flooded at high tide yesterday afternoon. It was described as the most serious tidal surge in more than 30 years. A tidal surge is caused a number of factors coming together. Firstly the weather - an area of low pressure with strong winds whips up the sea. It drags up the sea level. If the wind is strong and blowing towards the coast AND it co-incides with high tide you get a VERY high tide: "A tidal surge" and the result is often coastal flooding. Today, I've been getting your reaction and hearing your stories.
Julie Dyl is the owner of Rags Hotel and Restaurant on the harbourside in Bridlington. They carried on serving customers as the water came in! Here's Julie: Neil Hodgson is the co-owner of the Sandside Cafe at Sandsend. His business escaped unharmed, but the beach has never looked like this before. Here's Neil:

The £120,000 space will be private, away from the main labour ward, for families who lose a baby during birth or pregnancy. Maya Richardson is a regular guest on my show keeping us up-to-date on the fundraising. This month she'd got news of a new total, her own fancy dress dip plans and lots of other festive events. She started by telling me more about the appeal: www.york.nhs.uk/fundraising www.facebook.com/thesnowdropappeal www.justgiving.com/maya-richardson (01723) 236210 charity.fundraising@york.nhs.uk.
